Open air community spaces are something the Wingecarribee Shire needs more of to support a growing population.
That was the sentiment shared by the council’s communities and place director, Michael McCabe, at a sod turning event for a new park being built as part of the Ashbourne development at Moss Vale on Wednesday, July 23.
“The more that’s delivered and the more quality that’s delivered in relation to public recreation is important, and this is fantastic,” he said.
“I think it’s important for connection for the new community, and so the council can harness a park to create a place for people to get to know each other.”
Spanning nearly two acres, or more than 8000 square metres, the park will include a timber nature play area, shade trees, shared walking and cycling paths, a picnic shelter, open greenspace, and extensive landscaped gardens.
It’s the first recreational space being built as part of the Ashbourne development, and a new piece of public amenity for the wider Moss Vale community.
In a statement, an Ashbourne spokesperson said it marks the first new park to be delivered in Moss Vale since the upgrades to Bong Bong Common in late 2023, representing a meaningful addition to local infrastructure and the region’s ongoing growth.
CEO and Novm executive director Adrian Liaw says the park is a meaningful step in delivering the broader community vision.
“At Novm, we’ve always believed that communities are built around shared spaces,” Mr Liaw said.
“This park is the first real expression of that vision at Ashbourne.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see this milestone come to life, not just for our buyers but for the wider Moss Vale community,” he said.
The park’s design includes:
- Nature play elements like timber log balance equipment, climbing structures, carved sculptures and swings
- Sheltered picnic areas and bench seating
- Slip-resistant shared paths for walking and cycling
- Over 30 species of trees and over 5000 native shrubs and groundcovers
- Custom arbour and park entry signage, designed with materials and character inspired by the charm of the Southern Highlands
